Preppy Striped Bathroom

Today was a washout. Literally.

I woke to the sound of driving rain and wind. Shut inside with two tired children and a husband who was up to his neck in a mountain of laundry, I decided to paint the bathroom. It was in desperate need of a fresh coat as the walls were covered in streaks- a result of my six year old's penchant for long, hot showers. We used to think he just liked to be extra clean, then we found out what he's really been up to in there. Hockey. Apparently my father's stool makes a great net and the back brush serves as a hockey stick. We'd been hearing cheering, "He shoots, he scores!" and peeked in just in time to watch the bar of Dove sail cleanly into the top right corner of the net.

I have been putting off painting this room because I wasn't sure what color to do it. I was thinking about yellow and white or orange and white stripes- preppy and fun for summer- but wanted to let the color ideas marinate a bit before committing. Stripes aren't difficult to paint, but they are very time consuming because of the drying times in between coats. I ended up settling on Decorator White and Gull. (I had the Gull left over from my son's room and love it with both yellow and orange accents).

Here is the room before.. I've loved the color, but was a bit sick of it since I've recoated it 2 times already. Plus I really wanted to try lightening the room up with some white.
I also recently removed the towel cabinet, intending to come up with a new storage solution, but still haven't found anything that I like. Hence, our beer wash tub, serving as a towel bin and random art covering old nail holes.

Some photos of the process. The room isn't square so I started my stripes at eye level and just marked two dots and used a level around the room. Measuring never works in my house as nothing is straight!

Note Papa's "hockey net"

And the "Afters"

I'm a bit disappointed in the photos since the rainy weather is creating weird light,
however I am quite happy with the stripes.

The khaki and white make me think of a Ralph Lauren tote bag...

I repainted an old gold frame, added some legal pad cardboard and a starfish
